The Human Intervention Motivational Study (HIMS)

is a program designed to assist pilots who have encountered or are struggling with substance abuse or dependence issues. It provides a structured framework for evaluation, treatment, and monitoring, allowing qualified pilots to regain their medical certification and return to safe flying.

HIMS involves collaboration between aviation medical professionals, substance abuse specialists, and aviation authorities to ensure that pilots receive the necessary support and resources for a successful recovery and a return to the cockpit. This program has been instrumental in helping many pilots overcome addiction and resume their careers in aviation.

Substance Use and Alcohol-Related Issues (DUI, Alcohol Dependency, Drug Addiction, etc.)

The HIMS Program offers a structured path for pilots who have faced alcohol-related challenges like DUIs or addiction. It enables them to resume flying under specific conditions, involving vigilant monitoring, drug and alcohol testing, engagement in recovery programs, and continuous verification of their commitment to a clean and sober lifestyle. This comprehensive approach has been instrumental in assisting pilots in their successful return to aviation while prioritizing safety and responsibility.

Mood Disorders, Anxiety, and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)

Pilots who have experienced depression or are currently taking one of four specific SSRI medications (Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, or Celexa) may be eligible to resume flying following a comprehensive Neuropsychologic and Neuropsychiatric evaluation, typically involving a CogScreenAE (Aeromedical Edition).

HIMS & AME Role

A HIMS AME, or Human Intervention Motivational Study Aviation Medical Examiner, is an FAA-designated specialist trained to grant FAA Medical Certificates to pilots enrolled in the HIMS Program under specific conditions. Acting as an assessor and coordinator, the HIMS AME oversees various evaluations conducted by professionals like Neuropsychologists and Psychiatrists, as well as assessments for other medical conditions. Subsequently, the HIMS AME compiles a comprehensive report summarizing all findings and provides an aeromedical opinion regarding the pilot’s eligibility. This report is then submitted to the FAA for their assessment and approval of a Special Issuance FAA Medical Certificate, which typically carries a designated expiration date, differing from a Regular Issuance FAA Medical Certificate regulated by FAR stipulations.
