Genuine Care, AlwaysColor Vision

Color vision deficiencies, or color blindness, affect an individual's ability to accurately distinguish between specific colors. This condition can be inherited or acquired due to medical factors. Pilots with color vision deficiencies may undergo specialized testing to ensure they can interpret aviation signals and instruments accurately.

Are You Color-Blind?

If you have a color vision deficiency and cannot pass the Titmus Color Vision Test in our office, certain restrictions will be noted on your medical certificate, indicating it is not valid for night flying or by color signal control. The FAA provides a procedure (outlined below) to potentially lift this restriction.

The most prevalent form of color blindness is Red-Green deficiency. The color slide on the left should be distinguishable by everyone, including those with color vision deficiencies. Continue reading to find out more about the FAA color vision test.

This condition is genetically determined and is more common in males, affecting about 8%. In contrast, it impacts only about 0.5% of females due to its sex-linked nature. This genetic trait is carried on the X-Chromosome.

For females to exhibit color blindness, both X-Chromosomes must carry the deficiency. Males, having only one X-Chromosome, are more likely to display the trait if it is present.

If a color-blind female has children, all of them will inherit the deficient gene. This means a male born to a color-blind female will invariably be color-blind since he receives his X-Chromosome from his mother, and all of her X-Chromosomes carry the defective gene.

There are various types of color vision deficiencies. To delve deeper into this topic, you can explore the website Colblindor, which offers extensive explanations and tests to help identify your specific deficiency.

FAA Color Vision Flow Chart

The FAA follows a precise protocol for evaluating a pilot’s color vision. For a thorough breakdown of this process, visit the FAA Dispositions Page.

Refer to the FAA Color Vision Testing Flow Chart for a step-by-step guide on how pilots with color vision deficiencies should navigate the evaluation.

Additionally, you can find a comprehensive explanation of how the Operational Color Vision Test applies to pilots with color deficiency by clicking the highlighted link on another website here.

What Limitations Apply to Pilots with Color Vision Deficiencies?

If you have a color vision deficiency, your issued Medical Certificate I will bear the restriction: “NOT VALID FOR NIGHT FLYING OR BY COLOR SIGNAL CONTROL.”

To have this restriction lifted, pilots have two options: either pass an alternative color vision test or schedule an OCVT (Operational Color Vision Test) with an FAA Airport Tower. It’s important to note that there are two different OCV tests, and they can only be attempted once. If unsuccessful, the restriction becomes permanent on the medical certificate.

Given the one-time availability of these tests, many pilots may opt for alternative assessments like the Farnsworth Lantern Test (as mentioned above). However, FAA regulations stipulate that this test must be taken each time for every medical certificate, incurring a fee from the Farnsworth Lantern owner/tester.

Passing both OCVT administered by an FAA tower results in the issuance of a Letter of Evidence, and the restriction is permanently removed, making this the preferred option.

For 1st & 2nd Class Pilots, consult the FAA Color Vision Testing Flow Chart to understand how pilots with color vision deficiencies should proceed.
